LAURINBURG — The investigation into Tuesday’s shooting death of 20-year-old Laurinburg man continues as police try to piece together the details of what led to the incident.
Police confirmed Wednesday afternoon that Jaquan Miegal McKeithan of Hall Street was found shot to death at the intersection of Stewartsville and Lincoln roads in the Washington Park area.
Police Chief Darwin “Duke” Williams said officers responded to a call of shots fired at about 7:25 p.m. Williams said officers arrived at what appeared to be a wreck and found McKeithan unresponsive inside a white Mercury Grand Marquis.
McKeithan was pronounced dead at the scene.
Williams said police would release more information when available.
Pastor Michael Malpass of New Hope Baptist Church remembers McKeithan as a strong kid “who marched to the beat of his own drum.”
Malpass, who coached McKeithan, said his whole family got to know and love the young man in the time they spent with him. McKeithan also played during his senior year as point guard on Scotland High’s basketball team.
“He was undersized, but he was a competitor,” Malpass said. “That’s how he was in life. He didn’t settle for mediocrity. He wanted to beat the odds.”
McKeithan graduated from Scotland High in 2014 and started at Fayetteville State University the same year.
Malpass remembers the young man’s mother as being very supportive both academically and athletically and had strong faith.
Friends and family expressed grief and disbelief on McKeithan’s Facebook page.
