LAURINBURG — Downtown traffic should resume normal patterns today after Wednesday’s blockage of Main Street to allow for the installation of a new air conditioning unit at the A.B. Gibson Education Center.

A rented crane parked between Church and Cronly streets for most of the day, hoisting a 30-ton heat pump onto the Gibson building’s roof. Last week, a 25-ton unit was installed.

The new heat pumps replace existing units that stopped working in June.

“Both had crashed and we haven’t had air in parts of the building for about 5 weeks now,” said Roger Ammons, Scotland County Schools maintenance director. “We’ve been using fans to blow what little bit of cool air we had around the building.”

The cost for both new units was $71,300, Ammons said.
