LAURINBURG – Residents of Hasty are concerned about the speed limit in their area following a wreck that sent a Laurinburg woman to the hospital on Thursday.

Morgan Faith Locklear of Crestline Road was taken by ambulance to Scotland Memorial Hospital from the accident scene and later flown by life flight to McLeod Hospital in Florence, S.C., according to Roylin Hammond, director of Scotland County Emergency Services.

The wreck occurred at the intersection of Crestline and McQueen Roads at approximately 10:30 a.m., according to witnesses, when a 2015 Jeep operated by Locklear pulled into the intersection in the path of an oncoming 2005 Ford flatbed utility truck hauling a trailer with equipment being operated by Christopher Todd Horne of Peachland.

The NC Highway Patrol has obtained a copy of the security video from a convenience store located at the intersection, and charges against Locklear are pending, according to a highway patrol offical.

“The white truck swerved trying to miss it, but it caught the front driver’s side, and both vehicles went to flipping,” said Ruby Sanderson, who was driving north on Hasty Road.

The two vehicles collided, flipped through the air and landed upside down in the yard of a nearby home owned by Ronald and Diane Clark. Clark’s Chevrolet truck was also damaged in the incident.

Security video from Nicky’s Stop and Shop appears to confirm Sanderson’s account. A black Jeep can be seen pulling up to the stop sign and coming to a near stop before rolling slowly forward.

Diane Clark and other neighbors believe that speed and an obscured view played a part in the incident.

“I’m not trying to be mean, but you can’t see anything at that stop sign because of those bushes,” Clark said referring to a row of Crepe Myrtle trees planted along a fence at the corner of Crestline and Hasty roads. “You practically have to pull out in the road to see anything.”

Clark has had vehicles wind up in her yard from accidents on two other occasions.

Residents are also concerned about the speeds at which vehicles pass through the area.

“They come flying through here all the time; I don’t think the impact would have been that bad if the truck hadn’t been flying,” Sanderson said. “This is a residential neighborhood; they ought to enforce a speed limit.”

The speed limit in the area is 55 mph, but there is a caution sign warning of the intersection and suggesting a speed limit of 35 mph.

The sign was put in place after a nine year old child was killed after being hit by a car while riding her bicycle along Hasty Road.
