LAURINBURG – A wrong-way driver is responsible for a wreck that resulted in the rescue squad using the “Jaws of Life” to extricate a driver from her vehicle, according to police.

Scotland County fire, rescue, EMS and Laurinburg Police were called to the scene at the intersection of Crepe Myrtle Avenue and Atkinson Street shortly before 2 p.m. Thursday.

Jeanetta Canady of Laurinburg was traveling north along Atkinson Street in a 2017 Toyota hatchback when she was hit in the driver’s side door by Mary King of McColl who was operating a 2009 Toyota Tacoma, police said. King was traveling east in the westbound lane of Crepe Myrtle Avenue, according to Assistant Police Chief Cliff Sessoms.

Canady’s car spun out of control and came to a stop behind the Kangaroo Express gas station on Atkinson Street where rescue workers used extracting equipment to reach Canady and render medical assistance, police said.

Canady was transported to Scotland Memorial Hospital where she was treated for her injuries and released.

King is charged with failure to yield the right of way, according to police
