LAURINBURG – Scotland County Sheriff’s Office have arrested a South Carolina man they say attempted to defraud a relative and an insurance company earlier this year.

William Joseph Hopkins III, 26, of Neck Road in McColl, S.C. was arrested for allegedly committing forgery of instrument, uttering forged endorsement and obtaining property by false pretense.

In May, deputies were called to the East Laurinburg Community Mart on Andrew Jackson Highway where Hopkins was allegedly trying to cash an insurance settlement check from Geico made out to a William Hopkins Jr., according to Capt. Ruben Castellon Chief Detective of Scotland County Sheriff’s office.

Hopkins was arrested on July 13 and given a $9,000 secured bond.
