LAURINBURG – June is Men’s Health Month, and the Scotland Memorial Foundation wants to provide opportunities to make sure men know how to take care of themselves.

The hospital’s annual Men’s Health Event is a free two-part event.

On June 10, Scotland Memorial Foundation will offer free health screenings for prostate cancer, cholesterol, A1C, and blood pressure provided by local physicians. The screenings will take place in the Community Health and Rehabilitation building in the WR Dulin Center on the campus of Scotland Memorial Hospital located at 500 Lauchwood Drive from 8 to 11 a.m.

The five biggest preventable causes of death in men are hearth disease, high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, and cancer according to Patrick Bines, community health educator with the hospital.

“We hope to bring about a heightened awareness of preventable health problems and have men seek preventative treatments that will reduce their risk of contracting one of these problems,” Bines said.

On June 15, the hospital will host an evening with health care professionals with a panel discussion facilitated by physicians and the physical rehabilitation department from 5:45 to 8 p.m.

Panelists are:

— Dr. Andrew Brown, Radiation Oncologist – Scotland Cancer Treatment Center

— Dr. Matthew Manzo, Primary Care Physician – Wagram Family Practice

— Chuck Jackson – Scotland Health Care System Rehabilitation Department

“The oncologist will talk about prostate cancer and cancer in general; the physical therapist will speak about the importance of physical activity, how to ensure that you are getting the proper amount and activities people can do even if they have limitations,” Bines said. “Dr. Manzo will speak from the primary care prevention side, what people can do to diabetes and hypertension.”

Manzo will also discuss health and alcohol consumption, body mass index — or BMI, A1C and diabetes and explain what a CT scan is.

Hospital exhibitors and community partners will be on hand to provide information about cardiology, inpatient rehab, wound healing, and cancer services.

Staff members from the Wound Center will also provide free foot checks.

After the dinner and panel discussion, attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions about men’s health issues.

“The expertise provided by our terrific presenters is invaluable in helping the participants learn more about health issues, diseases, screenings and maintaining good health,” said Kirsten Dean, executive director of Scotland Memorial Foundation.

Attendance for the 2016 event was 125 men, and the hospital hopes to reach even more this year.

Men who attend could recieve a free 14-piece tool set and be entered for a chance to will a $250 Yeti cooler. Winners must be present at the time of the drawing to win the cooler.

The event is funded by Scotland Memorial Foundation’s annual Putting on the Ritz – A Gala of giving.

“We are excited to again host this fantastic evening centered on educating men in our communities about many ways to improve their health” Dean said.
