LAURINBURG — I. Ellis Johnson Elementary School was placed on lockdown for short time Monday afternoon after administrators at the school thought they heard what sounded like shots in the area.

Laurinburg Police Chief Darwin “Duke” Williams said school officials were following protocol after hearing the “firecracker like” noises in the neighborhood. Police said there were no reports of actual gun fire near the school Monday.

Officers were on hand to walk the children still in the school out to their vehicles and explain to parents what was going in after buses were loaded and allowed to leave the school.
