RCC to offer class on organic farming at Honeycutt Center

LAURINBURG – Richmond Community College will offer a series of agricultural classes on small plot vegetable farming beginning in February.

Classes in “New Strategies for Small Plot Vegetable Farming” will be held Thursdays from 6-9 p.m. beginning Feb. 6 through March 13 at the Honeycutt Center in Laurinburg.

The series, offered in conjunction with NC REAL and local partners, will present educational strategies for area farmers, as well as aspiring farmers, to learn strategies for small plot vegetable farming.

Organic farmer Tony Kleese will discuss challenges that face new and transitioning farmers in southeastern North Carolina and demonstrate a new farm model that incorporates crop-rotation techniques and hoophouses, allowing for maximized land use and meeting seasonal demand for high-value organic crops. Course topics will also include whole farm design, budgeting, marketing, soil, managing plant threats, successful growing, harvesting and distributing.

Kleese is a founding member of Eastern Carolina Organics. He brings a long history of educating sustainable farmers with an emphasis on entrepreneurship.

The class will meet in Room 130 of the Honeycutt Center, 600 McLean St., Laurinburg.

Tuition for the series is $70, but NC REAL offers scholarships for individuals in Columbus, Montgomery, Richmond, Robeson and Scotland counties. Students interested in scholarships must pre-register for the series, as well as complete a scholarship application.
