Shopping local spreads happiness

You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy local, and that’s kind of the same thing.

This is our motto this year for our “Shop Local” campaign. On the surface, it is a cute saying, but when you dive into it I hope you find a deeper meaning.

By shopping around Scotland County, you can score some great items, which will make you happy. It will also make the people working in the stores happy that you shopped there, because that helps with their job security. It will make the merchant happy, because it assists them in paying their bills and offering their products to our community. It also makes for a happier community because the more successful a community is, the happier the community. It definitely can have a ripple effect.

Don’t ever think that your purchase doesn’t make a difference. It does!

You can start your journey to happiness through shopping local by joining our community for “Christmas on Main” on Sunday. From 1-5 p.m., downtown Laurinburg is transformed into a Winter Wonderland to celebrate the kickoff of the Christmas season. During that time, you can enjoy some great entertainment and local artists. Our local shops will be open and there will be lots of activities for the children to enjoy like a train ride, bouncy houses, and more. This will be a magical time for our city and I hope you all come out and join us that afternoon.

During Christmas on Main and throughout the Christmas season, keep your receipts where you have spent money locally. When you have spent $250, bring those receipts to the Chamber and you can put your name into a drawing to win a Kindle Fire. This drawing will take place on Dec. 20, just in time to enjoy for the holidays or to be able to give as a gift for someone special.

In addition, this year for “Plaid Friday” — what most people call “Black Friday” — the Plaid Elf will be visiting area stores and will be surprising shoppers in various locations with a gift or gift certificate valued at $25 just to say thank you to shoppers who spend their money in Scotland County. I hope you will be one of those lucky shoppers. What a great gift to receive.

Thank you for each dollar you spend in Scotland County. If we all pool our resources and support our neighbors, it can make a big difference in the economy of our county. I am excited for this upcoming shopping season and hope that you will choose to stay local this year. You can’t buy happiness, but you can buy local, and that’s kind of the same thing.

I hope to see you out shopping!
