GIBSON — Following a silent public hearing, the Gibson town commission on Thursday tabled voting on an overhaul of the town’s ordinances until its December meeting.
The revision of the town’s ordinances, the first in more than 50 years, has been years in the making. The board opened a legally mandated public hearing on the new ordinances during Thursday night’s 15-minute regular board meeting, but no one spoke.
The board elected to table final approval of the ordinances until a presentation by Jean Klein of the Lumber River Council of Governments, who has performed the majority of the revisions.
“They haven’t been revised in a long time and a lot of the laws have changed,” said Town Clerk Myra Tyndall. “She’s just bringing them up to date. They’re at the town office for anybody who wants to come and look, but no one even came to look at them.”
The board also voted to change the days for which town employees will receive holiday pay. Normally scheduled for holiday between Dec. 24 and Dec. 26, this year Gibson’s employees holiday will be from Dec. 25-27 in order to tie in with a weekend.
“That gives them five whole days off rather than being off three days and coming back to work a day and then being off two more days,” said Mayor Ronnie Hudson.
In other business:
— The board formally rejected a bid of $7,322.85 for a backhoe owned by the town. The town will place it online to sell via auction with a starting bid of $10,000 to reflect recent repairs to the machine. Bidding will remain open for 30 days.
— Walter Brown, a member of the Four-County Community Services board of directors, informed the board that the elderly and disabled may apply for assistance with heating bills through the Low Income Energy Assistance Program, though funds will not be available until Dec. 1.
