LAURINBURG — Scotland High School earned the No. 1 overall seed in the East bracket of the Class 4A playoffs, and will host Heritage High School in the first round Friday, the North Carolina High School Athletic Association announced Saturday.
Scotland (10-0, 5-0 in the Southeastern Conference) won the draw for the top seed over Hoggard (10-1, 6-0) and now has the chance to play in Pate Stadium all the way up until the state championship game, provided the team can keep winning.
The road to Raleigh starts this Friday against the 6-5 overall Heritage team based out of Wake Forest. Scotland shares no common opponents with Heritage, which has only won one road game this season. Scotland coach Richard Bailey said he was happy with the seeding.
“Anytime you get the No. 1 seed you can’t complain. This is what we were aiming for and now we’ll have home field advantage throughout the playoffs,” Bailey said.
If Scotland gets by Heritage the second round game could be a rematch of last season’s semifinal. Defending state champion New Bern is seeded eighth and plays Southeast Raleigh, with the winner facing either Scotland or Heritage. New Bern is 8-3 this season, and 5-1 in their conference. The Bears eliminated Scotland 23-6 last season before winning the Class 4A state championship.
Other conference teams
Richmond and Pinecrest were the only other teams from the SEC to make it to the playoffs, and both of those teams were placed in the Class 4AA bracket. Richmond (8-3, 3-2) earned the No. 11 seed in the West and will face Lake Norman (8-3) in round one. West Forsyth (10-1) is the top-ranked team in the Raiders’ bracket.
Pinecrest was placed on the East side of the bracket as the No. 4 seed at 10-1. They will host Laney (6-4) in round one. Wakefield (10-1) is the No. 1 seed in the East.
