BELMONT, N.C. — The St. Andrews wrestling team dropped their season-opening match to NCAA Div. 2 Belmont Abbey College 23-8 on Wednesday afternoon in the first bout of the “War on 74” rivalry. The match was also wrestled outside on the lawn at Belmont Abbey.
Winners for the Knights include senior Chauncey Foster (125-pounds), freshman Dashon Eure (141-pounds), and freshman Jemson Villard (165-pounds). All three won by regular decisions. The meet was tied after six bouts at nine apiece, but Belmont reeled off the next four matches for the win. Vaughan had a close match at heavyweight as he was thrown to his back in the very beginning to go down 6-1 early, but rallied back to tie it at six before a late Belmont reversal won the match.
Foster and Villard led with four and five takedowns, respectively.
The match was the first in the newly-created “War on 74.” SAU coach Joe Baranik came up with the idea for a traveling trophy to be awarded between Belmont, SAU and UNCP.
SAU (0-1) will travel with some of their younger wrestlers to the UNCP Classic on Saturday, an individual tournament at Pembroke for experience and quality matches before returning home next Wednesday for the Knights’ home opener against conference foe Life University. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
