LAURINBURG — The Scotland County Sheriff’s office has created a task force that will twice a month concentrate its efforts in areas identified by residents and sheriff’s deputies as high-crime.
The Neighborhood Improvement Team completed its second operation this past weekend, netting 22 charges and eight arrests.
According to Capt. Scott Jacobs, of the patrol division at the Scotland County Sheriff’s office, officers will meet monthly to determine which Scotland County neighborhoods need the most attention. He said that so far, the office has targeted Cross Street in Gibson, Riverton Road in Wagram, Blakely Road in Laurinburg and the general area of East Laurinburg.
The area radius will expand and change as the team continues its work, Jacobs said. They plan to eliminate problems within communities that deal with drugs, traffic concerns, suspicious persons and domestic violence.
Jacobs said officers are “responsible for working in areas that we identify as high crime areas,” but that they are also taking resident’s complaints into consideration.
“We hear concerns and our intent is to make safer neighborhoods,” he said.
