LAURINBURG — Residents of Laurinburg and the surrounding areas no longer have to travel to a neighboring county to register a vehicle or renew a license plate.

The county’s license plate agency is now open at its new location, 508 E. Church St. The previous license plate agency, at 1106-A Aberdeen Road in Laurinburg, closed March 29.

“It saved me a ride out of town,” said Gene Ivey, of Laurel Hill, as he collected documentation from his car before entering the office Tuesday. “I thought I was going to have to drive out to Rockingham on my lunch break.”

The office saw a morning rush that had tapered to a steady stream of customers by early afternoon.

To save herself a long trip, Yvonne Marsh waited until the last minute to get her vehicle tags renewed.

“I took a chance and hoped the cops wouldn’t stop me,” she said with a laugh. “But I knew I had until the 15th.”

The office will be open Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. The phone number is 910-361-4177.

The agency offers vehicle registration services and title transactions, as well as vehicle license plate renewals, replacement tags and duplicate registrations. The state Department of Motor Vehicles operates about 120 license plate agencies across North Carolina, including 801 E. Broad Ave. in Rockingham and 520 West Donaldson St. in Raeford.

Vehicle registration can also be done online.

The office is operated by James C. “Colon” McLean Jr., a private contractor. McLean refused to talk to The Laurinburg Exchange when a reporter could not provide sufficient proof that they worked for this newspaper.

“I don’t give out information to just anybody,” he said.
