LAURINBURG — In the week leading up to its premier annual fundraiser, the Scotland Memorial Foundation promises to throw a gala grander than any in the event’s 20-year history.

The 20th Annual Putting on the Ritz: A Gala of Giving will begin at 6 p.m. on Oct. 19 on the campus of Scotland Memorial Hospital. In recent years, each Ritz has raised in excess of $100,000, totalling $2.1 million since the event’s inception.

“It has changed a lot — it is bigger, it is better, there’s more detail to make sure that people have a great time,” said Becca Hughes, this year’s Ritz chair and a former Scotland Memorial Foundation executive director. “They raise more money and overall the event is just bigger and better than it was when I was executive director.”

Proceeds from the Ritz fund a plethora of community health needs, including mammograms, medical supplies and equipment, prescriptions for low-income patients and annual diabetes fairs and chronic pain education seminars, as well as the Henley’s Heart Fund for cardiopulmonary rehabilitation patients and the Charles L. “Chuck” Hicks, Jr. Memorial Fund for cardiovascular patients.

At least 400 people are expected to attend the Ritz for a lavish all-you-can-eat buffet, a 140-item silent auction and eight-item live auction, and live music by beach music group Hip Pocket.

This year’s “Fund the Need” donation drive, held at the end of the live auction, will support capital funding for the hospital’s nursery and pediatrics departments.

“Each Foundation director has brought something different and special to the event,” Hughes said. “It’s spectacular what we can do, so I encourage people to come and see it because seeing it is tremendous.”

For the third year, the foundation is raffling off a car in conjunction with the Ritz, with the winner to be drawn during the gala. Tickets for this year’s car, a 2013 Chrysler 200 convertible, are $10 each and available at the following local businesses: 215 on Main, Dazzling Divas Boutique, The Medicine Shoppe, Art by Design, FCC, all Nic’s Pic Kwik stores, Associated Realty, First Bank, Norton Insurance, BB&T Bank, First Capital Bank, Outback Motorsports, Beauty Fair, G&M Outlet, Pate’s Furniture and Hardware, Becca Hughes State Farm Agency, General McArthur’s, Scotland Motors, Bob’s Jewel Shop, Graham and Grubbs Realtors, ShirtTales, Brady’s Flowers, Hair-Itage Styling Salon, Southeast Farm Equipment, Brenda’s Florist, Haney’s Tire, The UPS Store, Laurinburg-Scotland County Area Chamber of Commerce, Harley’s Tuxedo and Gifts, Wade Dunbar Insurance Agency, Charles Craft, Hasty Realty, Wade’s Hardware in McColl, S.C., The Clinton Inn, Hi-Lites Ladies Clothing, Whites Jewelry, Community One Bank , Hogan’s Hair Design, Young Professionals Network, Cooley’s Nursey, Jerry’s Deli, Z.V.
